Scarlett Johansson recently opened up about beauty standards in Hollywood a couple of decades back. She appeared in an interview to promote her new skincare line, The Outset, where she was asked her about “self-consciousness” and how women were treated in terms of beauty when she was young. To this, the Marvel alum noted that it was “such another time.” Furthermore, she admitted that women were “pulled apart” for their looks.
Scarlett Johansson revealed how Hollywood navigated beauty standards back in the day. Recently, the diva appeared on CBS Sunday Morning to talk about her new skincare line, The Outset. During the conversation, the host asked the actress about how people were “too focused” on her looks early in her career.
Recalling the time, Johansson pointed out that it was a long time ago. “Growing up in the entertainment industry and then…being a 20-year-old woman in the early 2000s, in the spotlight, I think in general, it was a really harsh time. I think women were just pulled apart for how they looked in a way that was socially acceptable at the time, and it was tough,” she said.
Furthermore, she highlighted that acting roles and opportunities to bag big projects depended on how an actress “looked” at that time. Johansson insisted that the options were “much slimmer” than it has been now.
According to her, she had a lot to offer than portraying the role of “bombshell” in movies. Therefore, the Oscar-nominee started doing theatre in New York, which helped her “get out of that pattern.” Johansson shared that she learnt over the years how to wait for the “right roles.” However, looking back at those times, she said it was “unsettling.”
Johansson also revealed that she used to be “self-conscious” about her skin. She said she hid her “acne” before going to work when she was young.
